Hey, Padre, The train's, delayed, It's come from far away, And somehow lost its' way, The line's, so straight, But time it meanders like falling leaves through window panes, Oh there's a god on this train St.Michael you're going far, You caught me up in Mullingar You broke your bread in mother's arms, And now you're wanting to grow, And Dublin feels like a lifetime ago, Faith, the shakes, The whiskey's in place, Boyle it goes screaming past, Ballymote's overcast, Carrick is awful cold But Padre I've nowhere left to go, It's on to Sligo, St.Michael you're going far, You caught me up in Mullingar You broke your bread in mother's arms, And now you're wanting to grow, And Dublin feels like a lifetime ago, You let go of the light, on the shore, And you gave all that you had and more, You let go of the Atlantic shore

Dampen the fire, there’s bodies for heat, There’s bums on the seats, And that’s all we need, But if it transpires that here’s our last meet, I don’t think the fire would keep, Stay where you are, the poker’s too far, The blower will soon fall apart, Just reflect the light, at home in your eyes, You know I’d beseech you to call, Would you call? A sedentary life, a coronary fright, a call in the depths of the night, A sun in the sky, a family cries, You know that we got this all wrong? Candid feverish heat, taking all extremities, From my feet to my crown you’ve stolen me, Cindered coal amongst the peat, A life to dust and ash to sweep, Like your warmth it will cease to fill the room, How you lived is how you’ll die, In the apple of my eye, And thought I know that time will try… Don’t dampen that fire.

I see your light in the dark Your window was opposite ours The door’s always open ajar At midnight it’s time to depart Where you go, in the night Singing your sweet lullaby I hope it’s always worthwhile, it’s worthwhile Singing in the morning time, singing through the hardest crimes Clinging to the paradigm, clinging to the chorus line, Clinging to singing Is there something you wish to atone? Did everything turn sepia toned? Know I see the colour in your bones And I’d love to come will show Where you go in the night, Singing your sweet lullabies I hope they’re always worthwhile, it’s worthwhile, Singing in the morning time, singing through the hardest crimes Clinging to the paradigm, clinging to the chorus line, Clinging to singing Oh John, how did this all go so wrong? You didn’t know, you didn’t see me, Hiding alone, watching, waiting, If I was your clone, would you believe it? I was your abettor

I bore you today and I swore you did everything right, But I made the mistake of endorsing your half beaten pride, Yeah you done it again well of course you did, everytime, I know you did all that you could but it wasn’t inside It’s just for the night, It’s just for tonight, Keep hanging on, I said all along that something ain’t right I wander away to the borders the corners the mines I wander away coz I’m already bored of the fight Yeah you done it again well of course you did everytime You shoved it away and just left it to fester a while It’s just for the night It’s just for tonight Keep hanging on I said all along that something ain’t right Lower your tone coz I’m getting there slowly I’ll see you at the end of the night Coz I’ve been here before and I’ll be back I’m sure in this stand off this capsule in time I didn’t know you at all when the fog came that night I didn’t see you til the light of the dawn I didn’t know you at all and I lost all foresight, Of the context of this cold cold war

I didn’t let go I held on as long as I could I through you a rope But you didn’t reach out and take a hold No I couldn’t see out But I heard you were splashing around Yeah I through you over the board Isn’t it wonderful, wonderful I never had enough? Isn’t it wonderful, wonderful I see you in the rough? Isn’t it wonderful, wonderful I never had, never had enough, Afloat and washed out Could’ve sworn you had a half smile on your mouth Oh when the rain came in the frozen skin the hardest thing I ever did was tow, you along Oh but there’s fire in your salty grin the parse the kin the swell the clinging on, And the sea it roars with things you bore distracts the oars and fades the shore I’m lost Isn’t it wonderful, wonderful I never had enough? Isn’t it wonderful, wonderful I see you in the rough? Isn’t it wonderful, wonderful I never had, never had enough, Oh well that’s enough

about

‘A Sedentary Life’ is Alf Whitby’s sophomore release, following on from his debut album of 2020. The EP is an exploration of a group of people - 5 songs, 5 characters, 5 stories. While the characters are based in reality, their stories are the figment of Whitby’s imagination, propelling the songs from mundane caricatures to intense adventures through unreality.
The EP’s opener ‘Calling Mullingar’ depicts a travelling priest on a train journey across Ireland, a metaphor employed to describe Alf’s journey through Catholicism in his younger years, and his ultimate destination. The song is dark and brooding - a strong juxtaposition to the EPs latter songs, which take on a more melancholic tone. The EP floats through peaks and troughs to climax in the ending song ‘Isn’t it wonderful?’, which depicts the rescue of our protagonist after going overboard into the sea during a storm, and a struggle to help them find their way back to the shore.

The alternative folk style of the EP revolves around a core of voice, guitar and piano, and draws influence from both traditional folk (Nick Drake) and more modern alternative styles (Sufjan Stevens). Juxtaposition between tenderness and angst is a key element to Alf's songs, with dynamic shifts bringing the listener along on a meandering ride. Lyrically the songs began as a cathartic release of thoughts and feelings too often left buried inside, but this has evolved into more structured storytelling involving an array of characters, perspectives and imagery.
