about

A song for a neighbour, Sarah’s song was written after the death of a young woman next door, who we’d only known for a short time during covid. It’s a reflection on the pain I saw from so far but from so close - a life apart, seperated by a wall and weird rules. The song imagines the time we could have spent together doing standard neighbourly things - chatting over the fence, lending some milk, popping over for a BBQ. And every time I’d look out at her garden, I’d get the sense that she still lived on through the leaves and trees that continued to flourish.

lyrics

Sarahs a ghost
I see her tend the garden alone
Yeah you carried such a weight on shoulders
The frame of which folds in the carryon

Could i raise a toast?
To the life you made the garden you’ve grown
To what still remains,
Your kids getting old
With dreams of his own in the backlog

I’d like to’ve known you
I’d like to’ve seen you through spring and through fall,
And over the fence panels
To see how you stood so tall
With everything out in blossom

I dream of your host
On those sunny days, with the barbecue coals
And the silly games on the old patio,
With the BBC playing on the radio,

But I feel you the most,
When it’s raining and the garden’s afloat
And it pains me coz a mothers a home
And now this one’s just mortar and stone

I’d like to’ve known you,
I’d like to’ve grown with you,
I’d like to’ve seen you,
To’ve seen you get old,

To’ve seen you get old,
To weather the wind that blows,
To scatter and sow,
These seeds in this life we know.
